A Brief Introduction to Hyperhidrosis

Profuse or excessive sweating is a relatively common problem affecting men and women equally. Almost 3% of the population is affected, largely among individuals aged between 25 and 64 years.

What about hyperhidrosis causes? Hyperhidrosis can be inherited, with 30-50% of individuals affected having a positive family history**. This genetic link is supported by a UCLA study suggesting that "sweaty palms syndrome" may be hereditary. Furthermore, another study found that 65% of those with hyperhidrosis reported familial occurrences^. Recently, a team of research scientists identified a gene responsible for palmar hyperhidrosis^^, underscoring the genetic basis of this condition.

While 3% may seem like a small percentage, it translates to approximately 400 individuals in a community of 25,000*. Interestingly, palmar hyperhidrosis can begin as early as age 13, while axillary (underarm) hyperhidrosis typically starts around age 19. Many patients with palmar hyperhidrosis report that the condition began during childhood.
